About this session:
Popular culture is awash in misinformation about how to live a healthy lifestyle. This is especially true in the context of diet and nutrition advice. There are, for example, hundreds of bizarre regimes that promise to cleanse our bodies of harmful toxins.
New celebrity-endorsed weight loss strategies seem to emerge almost daily. And the gluten-free health trend continues to be ridiculously popular. In this presentation, Caulfield will explore the social forces that are contributing to this confused state, including the role of public trust in science, social media, celebrities, and the circulation of conflicting “expert” advice.
This fun and provocative presentation will conclude with a consideration of evidence-informed strategies that can be utilized to counter the science-free noise.
