New insights into midge species attacking field crops on the Canadian Prairies

About this session:

During this session, Dr. Boyd Mori will discuss the impact of swede midge, a pest of canola discovered on the Prairies in 2007, and a newly, yet to be named species of midge, identified from canola in 2016. Dr. Mori will discuss the biology, range and extent of damage of both species and their potential impact on canola on the Prairies.

Dr. Tyler Wist will be discussing wheat midge, a highly destructive pest of wheat crops in Canada. Entomologists at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have been working to understand this pest’s biology, distribution and control in the Western Canadian Prairies since the first large-scale outbreaks of wheat midge in the 1980s. This presentation summarizes what we’ve learned since then with a focus on the lifecycle and timing of the wheat midge with advice on scouting and controlling for this pest during the critical times of the growing season.
